City of Thanjavur

Thanjavur, often anglicised as Tanjore, was the proud capital of the Chola dynasty, the great seafaring empire that shaped much of South India and Southeast Asia. Sitting amid the fertile rice fields of the Cauvery delta, this graceful town wears its imperial past lightly, yet at every turn it reveals why it remains a touchstone of Tamil art and architecture.
