City of Abhaneri

Abhaneri is a quaint little village in the Dausa district in northern Rajasthan. The name of the village presently is 'Abhaneri', which is beleived to be a mispronunciation of 'Abha Nagri' where Abha means brightness and Nagri means town, hence meaning the 'town of brightness'.

This ancient village of Rajasthan is famous for monuments said to belong to the post-gupta or early medieval period, namely Chand Baori and Harshat Mata temple.

Today the village is in ruin but it is thronged by tourists in large numbers to see the Chand Baori, a huge step well, a completely unique concept conceived by the natives to work as a water reservoir. The Harshat Mata temple built in the 10th century is considered an architectural marvel on the tourism map of Rajasthan. While the Chand Baori, fortified on all sides, is among the largest step wells in India. Abhaneri is also culturally renowned for the famous Rajasthani dances of ghoomar, kalbelia and bhawai.

How to reach

Abhaneri is located NH-11, which is also the Jaipur-Agra highway, it is well connected by all modes of transportation, be it trains, air or road. Both Jaipur and Dausa make Abhaneri very accessible for visitors, being 90 km and 30.9 km respectively.

The closest airport is the Jaipur Sanganer airport from where taxis are easily available to take one to Abhaneri, otherwise the government run and private buses also ply on the highway between Jaipur and Dausa or Agra.

Similarly, the railway connectivity too is well utilised with the closest railway station being Dausa.

Good Time to Visit

The good months to visit Abhaneri is during October to March because the summers can be intense to enjoy the monuments.
