City of Sanchi

Sanchi, crowning a quiet hill in Madhya Pradesh, is home to the oldest stone structures of Buddhist India and one of the most beautifully preserved monuments of the faith. Commissioned in the age of the Emperor Ashoka, who embraced the Dharma and spread it across his realm, this serene complex of stupas and shrines is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of exceptional grace.

The Great Stupa is the jewel of Sanchi, a vast hemispherical dome encircled by a stone railing and a processional path for circumambulation. Its four ornately carved gateways, the toranas, are masterpieces of early Indian art, their panels alive with scenes from the Buddha's lives and the legends of his teaching, depicted through symbols rather than his human form. Few sights in Buddhist India are so finely wrought.

Around the Great Stupa cluster smaller stupas, the remains of monasteries, temples and the stump of an Ashoka Pillar, while the on-site museum holds sculptures and the famous lion capital. The hilltop setting, breezy and open, with views over the plains, lends the whole site a calm and meditative air far from the crowds.
