City of Rajgir

Rajgir, cradled among green hills in Bihar, was a favoured retreat of the Buddha and one of the great cities of his age. He spent many rainy seasons here, and it was on its slopes that he delivered some of his most profound teachings. Both Buddhists and Jains hold the valley sacred, and its ancient stones still hum with that long devotion.

The spiritual highlight is Gridhakuta, the Vulture's Peak, a rocky outcrop reached by a gentle climb where the Buddha is believed to have preached the Heart Sutra and other key discourses. From the summit, with its modest meditation platform, the views over the wooded hills are sublime, and pilgrims often sit in silence where teachings once echoed. A ropeway carries visitors up to the gleaming Vishwa Shanti Stupa, a white peace pagoda crowning a neighbouring hill.

Rajgir is also famed for its hot springs, the Brahmakund, where warm mineral waters have drawn bathers and pilgrims for millennia. Scattered through the valley lie the ruins of the ancient city walls, Bimbisara's jail and the cave of the first Buddhist council, each adding depth to the sense of standing within living history.
