City of Nalanda

Nalanda was the greatest seat of learning of the ancient Buddhist world, a vast monastic university that flourished for centuries and drew scholars from across Asia. Students of philosophy, medicine, astronomy, logic and the sacred texts gathered here, and its renown reached China, Tibet, Korea and beyond. To walk its ruins is to stand at the intellectual summit of classical Buddhism.

The extensive archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spreads across acres of excavated red-brick monasteries, lecture halls, shrines and stupas. The towering Sariputta Stupa, with its tiers of votive shrines and traces of stucco figures, dominates the ruins, while rows of monastic cells and the foundations of great halls evoke the daily rhythm of a community of thousands of monks and teachers.
