Kanha, sprawling across the Maikal hills of Madhya Pradesh, is the green heart of central India and widely believed to have inspired Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. Vast meadows fringed by towering sal and bamboo forests open into rolling grasslands and meandering streams, creating one of the most beautiful and well-managed wildernesses in the subcontinent.

The Bengal tiger roams these forests in healthy numbers, but Kanha's special pride is the rare hardground barasingha, the swamp deer saved from the brink of extinction here. The reserve is divided into zones such as Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi, explored by open jeep on dawn and afternoon safaris.
