City of Sarnath

Sarnath, on the edge of Varanasi, is where the Buddha set the wheel of the Dharma in motion. Here, in a deer park, he delivered his first sermon to five companions, teaching the Four Noble Truths and the Middle Way, and the community of monks, the Sangha, was born. For pilgrims it is one of the four great sites of the Buddhist world.

The ruins spread across a serene parkland of lawns and ancient brick foundations. Rising above them is the Dhamek Stupa, a massive cylindrical monument of stone and brick believed to mark the spot of that first teaching. The museum repays an unhurried hour, its sculptures tracing centuries of Buddhist art.
