City of Kushinagar

Kushinagar is the place of the Buddha's parinirvana, where, after a long life of teaching, he passed beyond suffering and rebirth, lying down between two sal trees to give his final words to his disciples. As the site of the great passing, it completes the sacred geography of the Buddha's life and draws pilgrims from across the Buddhist world.

The heart of Kushinagar is the Mahaparinirvana Temple, which shelters a remarkable reclining statue of the Buddha. Carved from a single block of stone and stretching several metres in length, the serene figure shows him at the moment of his passing, draped each day in fresh golden robes by devoted pilgrims. The hushed interior, lit softly, is among the most moving spaces on the entire circuit.

Nearby rises the Ramabhar Stupa, a great mound marking the site of the Buddha's cremation, where pilgrims circle quietly and offer prayers.
