City of Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya is the spiritual heart of the Buddhist world, the place where Prince Siddhartha sat beneath a spreading peepal tree and rose as the Buddha, the Awakened One. The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, soars above the town in a graceful pyramid of carved sandstone. Behind it grows the Bodhi Tree, a descendant of the original under which the Buddha meditated, its branches draped in prayer flags and circled by the polished Vajrasana, the diamond throne marking the spot of awakening. Monks and laypeople walk slowly around the temple, telling beads and murmuring sutras.

What makes Bodh Gaya unforgettable is its living devotion. Tibetan, Thai, Burmese, Japanese, Bhutanese and Sri Lankan monasteries ring the town, each built in its own national style, so a single morning's stroll carries you through the whole Buddhist world. Robed pilgrims prostrate full-length on wooden boards, and butter lamps glow in the dusk.
