Gangaur Festival

Primary Location Rajasthan (Jaipur/Udaipur)
Festival Timeline March / April

The Gangaur Festival is a traditional festival celebrated in the state of Rajasthan, India, with great joy and fervor. It is a women-centric festival that celebrates the coming of spring and the harvest season. The festival usually falls in the months of March or April and lasts for 18 days.

The festival is dedicated to Gauri, a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Parvati, who represents purity and marital bliss. During the festival, women dress up in their finest clothes and jewelry and participate in various rituals and ceremonies to seek the blessings of Gauri for a happy and prosperous married life.

One of the main rituals of the festival is the procession of women carrying earthen pots on their heads, decorated with colorful clothes and jewelry, and containing an offering to the goddess. The procession is accompanied by music and dance performances, including traditional Rajasthani folk songs and dances such as Ghoomar.

The festival is also a time for women to engage in activities such as singing, dancing, and applying henna to their hands, which is considered a symbol of good luck and fertility.
